Training in Human Factors, the impact of human factors on aviation safety

The training provides participants with the necessary knowledge about the issue and impact of human factors on aviation safety. By promoting appropriate behaviours and actively engaging participants, this course supports the development of a strong and positive safety culture within your organisation.

The training complies with ICAO guidelines and helps develop the competence of personnel managing the human factor in aviation operations within the Safety Management System (SMS).

Who is it for?

The course is intended for employees performing operational functions related to safety management in the aviation industry and leads to a certificate of participation granted by Coventry University.

  • The SHELL model, a tool for understanding how different aspects (software, hardware, environment and other people) interact with each other and affect safety.
  • Human limitations and capabilities in the context of aviation operations, including situational awareness, decision-making and fatigue risk management system.
  • Classification of human errors and discussion of error management strategies and tools to minimise their impact.
  • Environmental factors, project elements and procedures affecting human performance and safety in the workplace.
  • Principles of Just Culture in the context of reporting aviation safety events, learning from mistakes and how they affect human performance in aviation systems.

    Training team

    Olivia Cox

    Senior consultant & psychologist, Olivia Cox holds a master’s degree with honors in Dynamic Developmental Psychopathology and a postgraduate specialization in Clinical Psychology. Her academic and professional background has equipped her with deep expertise in psychological assessment, workplace well-being, and safety culture development. Olivia joined Deep Blue in 2025 as a senior consultant, where she works across the training and railway domains. She has gained experience in these areas through participation in safety culture development projects, field research on risk perception, and training initiatives aimed at enhancing safety awareness among personnel in operationally critical environments. Her work focuses on integrating psychological principles into training design, promoting behavioral change, and supporting human reliability in complex socio-technical systems. Olivia has also worked extensively in clinical and institutional settings, gaining experience in individual psychological support, assessment of risk factors, and trauma-informed interventions. She is currently active as a psychotherapist, combining clinical insights with applied human factors expertise in safety-critical domains.

    Nicola Cavagnetto

    Senior consultant and trainer Nicola Cavagnetto (M) holds a master’s degree with honours in Wellbeing Psychology: Empowerment, Rehabilitation and Positive Technologies. His master’s thesis focused on risk communication during the Covid-19 pandemic and its impact on society. These studies allowed him to develop knowledge and skills in various areas of psychology – from immersive experiences in virtual environments, through user experience psychology, to environmental psychology – with a particular focus on action research. Nicola joined the Deep Blue team in 2021 as a consultant. His main professional experience focuses on research and training activities in the fields of aviation, drones and mobility. In the field of aviation and mobility, he is involved in the research, testing and validation of artificial intelligence-based tools, working on the basis of a human factors approach and framework. As an instructor, Nicola has experience in conducting crew resource management (CRM) training for unmanned aircraft operators (drones) and the Italian fire brigade, with a particular focus on human factors. He has also taught courses on the introduction to human factors and human factors in the context of artificial intelligence at the EUROCONTROL ALC centre.
